In the Trees, Honey Bees

In the Trees, Honey Bees book review
By Lori Mortensen and  Cris Arbo.
A Sharing Nature With Children Book.

Peek inside the tree and see a wild colony of honey bees. This beautiful book is a wonderful introduction for preschoolers and early school children to the world of bees.
This book is suggested for 4 to 12 year olds, which seems a very wide age range but is explained by the layout. The book is quite unique in that it has both a simple rhyming story and pictures with more indepth information together on each page. There are close-up beautifully painted views of the queen, the cells, bee eggs and the tree with simple verse:

Morning light.
Warm and bright.
In the trees,
Honey bees!

This book has won many awards including the CBC/NSTA Outstanding Science Trade Book 2010.

Doing some bee craft or looking out for bees in the garden would be a great extension of reading this book.

It was made by Chronicle Books and illustrated by Klaartje van der Put.

It is rhyming and educational: "Bees make honey for little bees and you".
The illustrations are bright and simple.

What do honey bees do in Autumn?

How doth the little busy bee
Improve each shining hour,
And gather honey all the day
From every opening flower.
Isaac Watts - Against Idleness
(Can you see the pollen sacks on the rear legs of the bee?)

Honeybees remain active all through autumn preparing for winter by storing some honey.

Planting flowers that bloom in autumn will help the bees, Some easy to look after flowers are heathers, cornflowers, sunflowers and baby's breath.

Heather

Cornflower

Sunflower

 Baby's breath

If it gets too cold the bees will stay in the hive and gather on the honeycomb making body heat by moving their wings in a different way than when in flight. The queen will slow down her egg laying, or even stop.
The worker bees control the hive's temperature so it does not drop below 45 degrees Fahrenheit. In the nursery, where the baby bees are, it is 93 degrees.

When the weather gets warmer the bees will go out to gather pollen, and the colony will start up again.

Can you hear the bees?

Listen! O, listen!

Here come the hum the golden bees

Underneath full blossomed trees,

At once with glowing fruit and flowers crowned.

Buzz said the bee - a fun bee book

Buzz Said The Bee was written by Wendy Cheyette Lewison and illustrated by Hans Wilhelm.
It is good for babies to first time readers and young children love to make the animal sounds. The words are simple, they rhyme and the illustrations are funny and colourful.
